Bernardo Calcagni, Genoa, 1742

Although details of his training are unknown, Bernardo Calcagni was the best maker of the 18th century Genova School. He was quite prolific while following basic Cremonese principles of design and craftsmanship.

This fine violin has rather flat and well-formed arches and a fine reddish-brown varnish. Its sound is robust and complex, as would be expected from a top 18th century Italian maker.
