Cello by

Jean Baptiste Vuillaume
Paris, c.1850

This exceptional Vuillaume cello was built c.1850, which we consider this important maker’s best period of production. While Vuillaume’s instruments were mainly built by the various fine craftsmen he employed, Vuillaume oversaw an unprecedented standard of quality that defined his output. Indeed, his craftsmen’s independent work did not achieve the same quality as their work while with Vuillaume.

This cello is made from superb materials and is covered with an especially fine varnish. The sound is as one would expect from Vuillaume’s best cellos: powerful and responsive with a compelling timbre.
