Cello by

Giovanni Grancino
Milan, c.1697

Giovanni Grancino was the leading maker in Milan and is especially well regarded for his cellos, which were built as large “basso” instruments in the style of the Amatis. Like most of these cellos, this good example was reduced somewhat to dimensions suitable for modern players.

This cello has a compellingly deep and enveloping sound. Because the head was made by another maker, it is modestly priced and can be considered a true players cello.
