Dom Nicolo Amati, Bologna, c.1700

The violin maker known as Dom Nicolo Amati was born Nicola Marchioni and trained as a priest in his early years. Marchioni was associated with the Tononi family but developed a recognizable and distinctive individual style. He labeled his violins “Amati” probably for commercial reasons. His instruments have often been confused with those by Domenico Montagnana and other great Venetian makers.

This violin, a pure and bold example of ample proportions, boasts a powerful and robust sound with fine coloration.
