Francesco Rugeri, Cremona, 1678

Francesco Rugeri was certainly the most productive cello maker in Cremona during the golden age of violin making. The productivity of his workshop, just outside the walls of the city, could be partially explained by the assistance of his four violin-maker sons.

Rugeri cellos are especially esteemed for their rich and complex sound. This outstanding example, of ample proportions, is made with an attractive back of locally grown willow. Rugeri and the Guarneri family seemed to have preferred this type of wood – no doubt for the rich quality of sound it produced.
