Giovanni Francesco Pressenda, Turin, 1849

Giovanni Francesco Pressenda led a renaissance in Italian violin making that looked back to the models and precision of the classical period. In his work, he used a personalized Stradivari model that is unique and interesting.

This very pure late example was made when Pressenda was 72 years old – just five years before his death. Like other Pressenda violins of this period, it is covered with a transparent golden-orange varnish rather than the thick reddish varnish he favored earlier. In this respect, he seems to have been influenced by the work of his illustrious student Giuseppe Rocca.
