Giuseppe Baldantoni trained in the family business, which crafted weapons in addition to nautical, optical, and other instruments. Baldantoni was also a double bass player. So it seems natural that he was drawn to the profession of instrument maker; he apparently made both string and wind instruments.
Along with Andrea Postacchini, Baldantoni became a leading maker from his region in Central Italy. This excellent example roughly follows the style of golden period Stradivari, with flat edges and low arches. It survives in a very pure state and has a complex, robust sound.
