Giuseppe Guadagnini, Pavia or Como, c.1792

The second son of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini, Giuseppe left his father’s workshop in Turin when he came of age and worked at various times in Pavia, Como, and Milan.

Giuseppe adopted a rustic style that was nevertheless inspired by his father’s instruments. This fine viola, which is slightly under 16 inches in length, has robust and attractive tonal qualities. The scroll was made some years earlier by Carlo Antonio Testore of Milan.
