The Silvestre brothers are considered among the best mid-19th century French makers, along with Jean Baptiste Vuillaume and Georges Chanot. Hippolyte Silvestre trained with Vuillaume, and when he was 23, joined in partnership with his older brother, Pierre, in Lyon in 1831.
This violin was made in 1847, one year before Hippolyte left the partnership. It is handsome and refined and is built on an elegant but large Stradivari-inspired model. It has a bold and responsive sound.
