Stefano Scarampella, Mantua, 1920

Stefano Scarampella is probably the most sought after maker from the turn of the 20th century because his instruments look back to a regional style from his city of Mantua and eschew the “modern” style of making that prevailed at the time. We have handled a good number of similar violins by this maker, always with great results.

This fine example from his best period follows a model that seems to have been inspired by both Tomasso Balestrieri and Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù”. Scarampella violins are known for a powerful sound that boasts a classical palette of tonal colors, and this violin is no exception.
