Viola by

Simone Giamberini
Florence, 1772

Although the biography of this rare Florentine maker is unknown, we were excited to obtain this benchmark example of Simone Giamberini’s work, which retains its original manuscript label. It is only the third instrument by this maker that we have seen.

The model, varnish, and perfection of the workmanship suggest that Giamberini could have been a student and/or successor to Giovanni Battista Gabrielli. The instrument remains in near-mint condition and has a size just under 16 inches. This superb viola is suitable for solo, chamber, or orchestral work.
