Viola by

Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi
Milan, 1757

The city of Milan produced some of the finest contralto-sized violas, beginning with the Grancino and Testore families in the 17th century. By the mid-18th century, G.B. Guadagnini and Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi were actively making violas, which are among the most sought after by today’s violists. Of all these makers, Landolfi’s work is the rarest.

This fine Landolfi viola is tonally outstanding and measures slightly over 16 inches (40.8 cm). It is made from especially attractive maple and is fully covered by a gorgeous orange-red varnish.
