Violin by

Bernardo Calcagni
Genoa, 1741

The best violin maker from the northern Italian port city of Genoa, Bernardo Calcagni made well crafted instruments on various models all with an individual style. This fine example was built on an elegant Guarneri-inspired model and has a fine orange-red varnish that approaches the quality of the Cremonese varnish of the time. Although the violin is of modest proportions, it has a sound with superb quality and ample fullness.
