Violin by

Pietro Antonio Dalla Costa
Treviso, 1749

Although little biographical information has been discovered about Dalla Costa, we know that he was born in the city of Treviso north of Venice about 1696. He was active there until his death in 1770. He is a well-known Veneto maker who, interestingly, followed the style of the Brothers Amati as was occasionally mentioned on his labels. He is perhaps most famous for a violin that was in the possession of Mozart and that is now exhibited at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

This pure and splendid example bears an original label together with the maker’s signature inscription on the wood alongside it.
