Violin by

Pierre Silvestre
Lyon, 1856

Pierre Silvestre trained with Nicolas Lupot and Charles Adolphe Gand before establishing himself in Lyon in 1829. He became one of the finest mid-century French makers together with George Chanot and Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. He was also a successful expert and dealer.

This violin is elegantly made following a Grand Pattern Nicolo Amati. It has graceful arches and a lush brownish-red varnish. The sound is likewise refined and lush.
